Role

Project co-Lead responsible for:
  • defining the research scope
  • designing the research program across research, public engagement, and creative technology artworks
  • co-authoring white papers and creative technology artworks

Overview

In 2023, in article about Dr. Timnit Gebru , we were introduced to the concept of Slow AI. Since then, we've researched what “Slow AI” could mean in practice.
An on-going AIxD research stream, Slow AI reimagines what AI could look like beyond Silicon Valley ideologies. Sub-topics include:
  • Small AI: What could we make if scale wasn’t an objective?
  • Ancestral AI: What can we learn from data-led decision making of the past?
  • Esoteric AI: What can we learn from predictive technologies of the past?
This project is our practical execution of Dr. Ruha Benjamin’s invitation to “imagine and craft the worlds we cannot live without, just as we dismantle the ones we cannot live within”.

Approach

  • participatory session to kick off. 60 members of AIxDESIGN community, facilitated by 6 hosts. Refined our scope to the 3 sub-topics above.
  • Research Lead for each subtopic – conducted desk research, expert interviews including 1x public session. Initial insights per subtopic shared.
  • Public engagements to workshop key insights (zine-making workshops with internet teapot)
  • Commissioned artists to explore key insights

Outcomes

In May 2025, 200 people gathered at the AIxDESIGN Festival: On Slow AI (Amsterdam) to explore, debate, and make with Slow AI principles. Full recap coming soon.
